The 5S Specialist is responsible for developing, implementing, and sustaining 5S and workplace organization standards across the facility. This role focuses on driving a clean, efficient, and well-organized environment that strengthens safety, quality, productivity, and employee engagement. The 5S Specialist partners closely with production, maintenance, engineering, quality, and leadership teams to build a culture of continuous improvement.

  • Implement 5S: Lead and support the application of Sort (eliminate unnecessary items), Set in Order (organize for easy access), Shine (clean and inspect), Standardize (create consistent rules), and Sustain (maintain discipline).
  • Training & Support: Conduct 5S training for staff, support supervisors, and help teams integrate 5S into daily routines.
  • Auditing & Monitoring: Perform regular 5S audits, document findings, and track progress.
  • Improvement Projects: Lead or participate in projects to reduce waste, improve flow, and optimize space.
  • Documentation: Create and update standards, visual aids (like charts), and reports for management.
  • Culture Building: Foster a continuous improvement mindset and ensure long-term adherence to standards.

Key Requirements

  • Skills: Excellent organization, problem-solving, communication, leadership, and attention to detail.
  • Knowledge: Understanding of lean manufacturing, waste reduction, and visual management.
  • Experience: Previous involvement in process improvement, quality control, or operational efficiency roles.
  • Attributes: Self-disciplined, proactive, team-oriented, and committed to sustained change.

Top candidates are expected to demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to:

  • Continuous Improvement A core part of the 5S philosophy is fostering a culture of ongoing learning and improvement (Kaizen mindset).
  • Problem-Solving Skills Candidates should be able to identify areas for improvement and propose solutions, leveraging the "Shine" phase where cleaning doubles as inspection to spot potential issues (e.g., leaks, wear and tear).
  • Comfort with Structured Systems 5S involves adherence to standardized procedures and checklists. Top candidates are comfortable working within these structures and contributing to their development.
  • Ownership and Accountability The methodology requires employees to take ownership of their work areas and responsibilities. Candidates who show a sense of responsibility and discipline are highly valued.
  • Collaboration and Communication Implementing and sustaining 5S requires teamwork and open communication, including providing feedback and suggestions for improvement.
  • Organizational Skills Candidates should naturally be organized and understand how an organized workspace (Sort and Set in Order) directly impacts their daily workflow and efficiency.

Qualifications

  • Postsecondary education in Manufacturing, Engineering Technology, Industrial Management, or related field preferred.

Experience

  • 5+ years in manufacturing (automotive manufacturing preferred).
