Job Summary

SyBridge Technologies Canada Inc. is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Senior Designer and Surfacer to support our Engineering Department and contribute to the delivery of high-quality mold solutions. This role is ideal for an individual with advanced experience in the design, surfacing, and modification of plastic injection molds using CATIA software within a precision-driven manufacturing environment. Reporting directly to the Engineering Manager, the Senior Designer and Surfacer plays a key role in ensuring accuracy, functionality, Class A surface integrity, and first-time quality in all mold designs while supporting Program Managers to meet project timelines and customer requirements.

This position collaborates closely with engineering, production, program management, customers, and manufacturing teams to align design execution and surface development with technical specifications, aesthetic requirements, and delivery objectives. Success in this role requires advanced technical proficiency in mold design and surfacing, strong attention to detail, leadership capabilities, time management skills, and a commitment to driving customer satisfaction in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Complete engineering projects including tooling, mold, and surface design development.
    • Develop, review, and refine Class A and production-ready surfaces in CATIA V5 to support customer styling and manufacturing requirements.
    • Verify and check functional needs of manifold and ensure it meets mold flow requirements.
    • Modify and/or develop cooling and ejection systems.
    • Verify mechanisms function properly within the design.
    • Understand and apply customer or SyBridge Technologies standards to mold and surface design.
    • Verify molds meet customer and try-out location press parameters.
    • Incorporate machining, surfacing, and mold-making best practices with consideration for cost, manufacturability, and timing.
    • Perform surface feasibility studies, continuity analysis, and gap/flush evaluations as required.
    • Independently attend customer reviews and technical meetings as needed.
    • Incorporate all customer and SyBridge Technologies safety standards into all tool designs.
    • Initiate purchase requisitions for block sizes, manifolds, and other purchased components.
    • Ensure Class A surfaces meet quality, fit, finish, and manufacturability expectations.
    • Successfully maintain a fluctuating workload, multitask on jobs, and manage conflicting priorities with minimal supervision.
    • Act as a technical authority ensuring adequate steel and seal-off conditions, water locations, ejection quantity/size, tool strength (pillars, manifold cutout, plate thickness), assembly feasibility, and manifold approvals.
    • Responsible for interacting with internal personnel and customers at various stages to ensure quality tooling and surface development, including providing documentation for customer approval.
    • Work closely with Surfacers, Designers, and manufacturing personnel to produce quality and cost-effective tooling.
    • Communicate best practices and lessons learned with Engineering Team Managers and peers.
    • Mentor and support junior designers and surfacers as needed.
    • As needed, make appropriate personnel aware of any hardware/software inadequacies that hinder productivity.
    • Support continuous improvement initiatives related to design efficiency, surfacing standards, and tooling quality.
    • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or college certification in mold making, design, surfacing, industrial design, or equivalent is required.
    • Minimum of 7 years of related experience designing tooling/plastic injection molds and/or Class A surfacing in a manufacturing environment.
    • Advanced proficiency in CATIA V5, including mold design and surfacing workbenches.
    • Strong understanding of Class A surfacing principles, continuity requirements, and automotive/customer quality standards.
    • Experience with tooling feasibility, mold construction, and manufacturing processes.
    • Ability to perform under pressure and work independently.
    • Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines as required.
    • Ability to ensure quality standards are consistently met.
    • Strong attention to detail is required.
    • Strong leadership, interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills.
    • Proficient time management and organizational skills.
    • Experience supporting customer-facing engineering reviews is considered an asset.
